When Spencer’s Tivoli Theatre reopened in April, 2013 the community was very excited to have our historic movie theater back in operation. At the time we had been having monthly Family Movie Night programs here at the library so naturally we wondered if we might be able to team up with the Tivoli to increase this program for our community to be able to see a movie for free in this beautiful theater. We also had our brand new Bookmobile and were eager to show it off at every opportunity. Our first FREE Family Movie Night was held at the Tivoli in June of 2013, with around 200 people coming to watch the adventures of Indiana Jones inRaiders of the Lost Ark with the Bookmobile parked right in front of the theater. The next month we had to close the doors and turn people away due to being filled to capacity for our showing of The Goonies. Since moving the program to the Tivoli we have shown 75 movies to thousands of attendees. Our crowds have waxed and waned over the years, but it remains a very popular collaboration for our community. This program, along with the bookmobile has increased the library’s visibility in the community and has enabled us to advertise other library programs and services. As always, Tivoli volunteers are on hand to sell concessions and our community sponsors help to offset the licensing fees charged by the studios so that we don’t have to sell tickets. While we still do show occasional movies here at the library, our collaboration with the Tivoli is still going strong the third Thursday of every month at seven o’clock in the evening. Upcoming movies include The Mummy (1999), Mrs. Doubtfire, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Annie (1982). As always, stay tuned to the library’s website, newsletter, social media accounts and in-house advertising for more information on this and other library news.
